When my daughter’s 14th birthday arrived I was on an archaeology dig at Bonneville Dam, near Beacon Rock. The family celebrated her big day by driving down from Seattle. Then we toted a store bought cake to the top of Beacon Rock, lit candles, sang Happy Birthday and shared cake with an amused couple who were taking in the magnificent view of the Gorge. Being 14, the birthday girl didn’t see the humor in this party, but even she admitted the scenery was magnificent., especially the eagles swooping over the Columbia.
